  How to Buy Dumbbells

Oftentimes the first purchase you will make for your home gym is a good set of dumbbells.  This is because dumbbells by themselves can give you a versatile full body workout.  With the right dumbbell combinations, you have at your disposal the ability to create an unlimited number of exercises.  This is especially true if you have a weight bench in your home gym.  In this article, I'll review some different popular types of dumbbells to help you select the right dumbbell for your home gym.

In the basic price range, the most popular options are PowerBlock dumbells and Bowflex Selecttech dumbbells. On the higher end of the spectrum there are hex dumbbells and prostyle dumbbells, which you will often find in a commercial gym.  Either one of these options can work in a home gym.  Let's take a look at some models that are on the market.

Adjustable dumbbells are popular because they are inexpensive.  However, sometimes you get what you pay for.  While they are effective in delivering a workout, often they simply take too long to change.  The result is that most people end up neglecting them because they are inefficient for working out.  Some people find that they really need two sets in order to adjust the dumbbells quickly.  This does not make them cheap anymore.

Bowflex dumbbells are pretty good because of their quick changes and high-quality construction.  Also, they come with a lifetime warranty.  Another good thing about these type of dumbbells is their design.  It is made to be compact, so it does not take up much space in the home gym.  The only disadvantage is that the heaviest you can make these dumbbells is 52.5 pounds.

Hex dumbbells are what commercial gyms often use.  The fact is that they are well-balanced and are about as durable as they come.  The downside is that they often require a lot of space.  That is why you rarely see them in smaller gyms.  Besides space issues, budget concerns may play a role as well.  They are a more expensive option.  However, again you get what you pay for.  Additionally, you will need a dumbbell rack if you're going to purchase these dumbbells.

Other dumbbell options to consider are Pro Style Dumbbells, Powerblock Dumbbells and Bayou Dumbbells. Check each of these out before making a decision on which dumbbells you will purchase for your home gym. Reviews are provided for the most popular Bowflex Dumbbell models.
